The following are the in-house researchers working on projects from IRFRC.

 

Uditha Balasooriya
Senior Lecturer

Prof Uditha Balasooriya is currently in the School of Nanyang Business School since 2001. He received his Bachelor degree in Mathematics and Statistics and Diploma in Statistics from the University of Sri Lanka, Master and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Western Ontario respectively. His research interests include reliability analysis, and actuarial modelling. He has done significant research work his research areas and published over 30 top quality international conference and journal papers. He has been often invited as a referee/reviewer for a number of premier journals, including IEEE Transactions on Reliability, Canadian Journal of Statistics, Journal of Actuarial Practice, Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference, and Technometrics. Dr. Balasooriya is a member of American Statistical Association, Canadian Statistical Society and Singapore Institute of Statistic.

Joelle Fong
Senior Research Fellow
Insurance Risk and Finance Research Centre

Dr. Joelle Fong is a Senior Research Fellow at IRFRC in the Nanyang Business School, NTU. She graduated with a PhD in Applied Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 2011, and holds Masters degrees from Wharton and Singapore Management University. Joelle’s research interests focus on the economic and health aspects of population aging, pension economics and finance, public and private insurance markets, longevity risk management, retirement security, and long-term care. Her research has been published in the Journal of Risk and Insurance, North American Actuarial Journal, Journal of Pension Economics & Finance, Scandinavian Actuarial Journal, and Health Services Research. Joelle currently serves on the Board of Governors for the Asia-Pacific Risk and Insurance Association, and is also an Associate Investigator with the ARC Centre of Excellence in Population Ageing Research, University of New South Wales, Australia.

Caitriona Helena Heinl
Research Fellow

Caitríona Heinl joined the Nanyang Business School Cyber Risk Management Project as Research Fellow responsible for leading cybersecurity policy analysis in March 2017. She transferred from the Centre of Excellence for National Security (CENS) at RSIS where she held the position of Research Fellow responsible for policy analysis on cyber issues since October 2012.

She publishes peer-reviewed articles and policy advisory reports on subjects that include international and regional cooperation on emerging cyber challenges, international security and international cyber policy research (norms, CBMs, capacity building), country case studies, national security implications of emerging technologies like cyber capabilities and increasingly autonomous technologies, public-private partnerships, and cyber defence. She currently holds a non-resident international fellowship with the ASPI International Cyber Policy Centre, Canberra.

Shinichi Kamiya​
Assistant Professor

Dr. Kamiya has significant research expertise in the areas of Insurance Economics and Risk Management. His areas of past research include, underwriting, adverse selection, moral hazard, and operational risk and reputational risk management. 

Dr. Kamiya earned a Master degree in Applied Mathematics in University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a Ph.D. degree in Risk and Insurance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His expertise in research is complemented with practical experience as an underwriter in Japanese P&C insurance market.

Ciyu Nie (Jade)

Ciyu Nie (Jade) is a qualified actuary from the Institute of Actuaries of Australia. She graduated from The University of Melbourne (Australia) with a PhD degree in Actuarial Science. Before joining NTU as a lecturer, she has firstly worked in Ernst & Young (Shanghai) as an actuarial consultant, and later on worked in Alibaba Group as a data scientist. Her combined experiences in the insurance industry as well as the internet industry greatly inspired her interests in big data analytics as well as cyber risk management. She is now a member of the IRFRC and her current research is focusing on cyber risk modelling.

Shaun Shuxun Wang

Shaun Shuxun Wang is Professor of Actuarial Science at Nanyang Business School (NBS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Dr. Wang is an internationally renowned expert on quantitative risk modeling and enterprise risk management. He has published over 30 refereed scholarly papers in top actuarial and insurance journals including the ASTIN Bulletin, the Journal of Risk and Insurance, The North American Actuarial Journal, and Insurance: Mathematics and Economics. Several of his papers received international awards, including the 2010 Robert Mehr Award by the American Risk and Insurance Association, and "most citations". He is the inventor of the "Wang Transform", a widely-cited actuarial formula for pricing risks.

Bailey Yeung Ka Chun
Senior Research Scientist
Insurance Risk and Finance Research Centre

Bailey Yeung joined the Nanyang Business School Cyber Risk Management Project as a Senior Research Scientist responsible for cybersecurity data validation in June 2017. Prior to joining NTU, he has worked at SCOR Re under the technical closing team and at ECICS Limited in an actuarial capacity. His research interests focus on addressing cyber risks from a risk management perspective that involves underwriting, pricing and reinsurance structures.

Bailey Yeung graduated from Georgia State University with a Master of Actuarial Science degree.
